Microsoft - Home User Magazine

Microsoft had identified a need to understand more about home users. Microsoft decided to set up a research panel to show home users how to get the best from their PC with the aim of improving consumers' confidence to fix problems when they arose. Project Techniques were appointed to provide programme management support.

A separate, but related activity was to bring together in one place a diverse set of information on Windows 98. A range of articles showing users how to get the best from this platform was brought together on a newly-created website and on a CD-ROM, available free to consumers.

Microsoft decided to increase the scale of its engagement with consumers and developed an online magazine: HomeUser Magazine. The first edition was circulated to around 5,000 newly-recruited subscribers and the initial results indicated that consumers welcomed the wide range of articles.

Project Techniques provided programme management support for the development and running of the consumer panel, the development and distribution of the Windows 98 content and for HomeUser Magazine.

Our role has been to manage the various outsourced service providers, including the magazine editor, research agency, web designer as well as the range of staff within the UK business groups who contribute ideas and suggestions. We are also helping to build the take-up of the online magazine, report key metrics within the business and raise awareness within Microsoft.

There has been much interest in the innovative nature of HomeUser Magazine from Microsoft offices in EMEA and in USA for developing local consumer programmes. The online magazine is also seen as an effective way of communicating access to 'how to' content to other groups of users, including new PC users and school teachers.
