Fleet Air Arm Museum - The Carrier Exhibition

One of the world's most unusual permanent exhibitions - The Carrier Exhibition - came to fruition with the help of Project Techniques at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton.

Located on the ground floor of the museum, the exhibition was in its very early stages, but looked set to be over budget and late in delivery. Originally the exhibition was to feature a replica Air Craft Carrier built in an existing hanger on the six and a half acre site. However, when building commenced it was discovered that a 20,000 ft. extension was required, in addition to major alterations on the site itself. It was at this stage of the building that Project Techniques were appointed.

The Project Techniques' management group worked closely with the design and operations team at the Fleet Air Arm Museum with a clear objective of creating the proposed exhibition not only within the allotted budget but also the timescale.

It was important that the budget was adhered to and to ensure plans were not compromised a careful strategy was devised by Project Techniques relating to the deployment of the available budget. Every stage of the package was carefully interfaced with the next to ensure all cost was realised and, where possible, items were purchased directly to minimise costs.

The complex project lasted 18 months in total but was delivered on time and within the constraints of the budget.

The completed exhibition is now one of the museum's main attractions. It re-creates a 1970s aircraft carrier and uses high-tech displays and an experience chamber to give visitors a realistic impression of life aboard a real aircraft carrier.

Grey Pixel   The Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton displays a fine collection of all aspects of the history of naval aviation and the operations of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm. It features the aircraft they have flown, the people who have served with them, and the ships and stations where they served, in the context of the development of aviation at large.
